The remaining buses are being replaced by such newer buses, as well as newer model Nove LFS articulated units. Like many older transit buses, the D60HF is no longer being manufactured, as New Flyer only produces its Xcelsior low floor line of transit buses. Upon the conversion, the D60HFs were immediately replaced by newer Nova LFS and New Flyer Xcelsior articulated models.

These buses were originally designated as the D60 prior to the manufacturing of low floor buses and are also known by their nickname, the “Galaxy”. I got to ride one of these buses along the M79 “Crosstown” route in Manhattan prior to its conversion to Select Bus Service (BRT Lite). May’s “Photo of the Month” showcase is New York City Transit #5618, which is either a 2002 or 2003 New Flyer D60HF articulated transit bus. This is among several buses that are currently being retired. The MTA may also be looking to future the future possibility of testing the NOVA LFS HEV. The MTA has tested this bus or had a demo within the last year and is expecting (5) demos to be delivered to MTA BUS and 100th Street within the next few weeks. Bronx artics being displaced will be going to brooklyn for SBS service in 2009. Upon completion in May 2009, the MTA will announce the purchase or intent to purchase up to 375 with option for 125 more in 2010 with delivery takin places beginning in fall/winter 2009 with most of the buses being assigned to Bronx/Queens/Staten Island and (2) MTA Bus Depot. Fiogf49gjkf0dA fairly reliable source has indicated to me that the MTA is awaiting completion of NovaBus's new facility in plattsburgh N.Y.
